Organic Food
Not all organic food is the same but most of it shares many things in common. For the most part it involves organic farming whereby strict conditions are laid down on the use of artificial chemical pesticides and also fertilizers. There are also conditions on the way livestock is handled (must have plenty of space, must not be given too much in the way of antibiotics etc) and genetically modified crops are strictly forbidden. Farmers who form part of organic agriculture must have their produce checked by many different organic organisations to make sure that they are meeting the legal parameters.
But is organic food ‘better’ for us? Those who favour it would argue so and it would make sense that food with pesticides or the like would in theory be much better. However, the Food Standards Agency (FSA) points out that there is not yet enough scientific proof that the food is any safer than those produced from conventional methods. Time will tell, but food produced from methods such as crop rotation and natural ways of controlling pests will continue to be a popular alternative to conventionally produced food.
